Maine's rock story is one of granite, rounded or striated, rolled or bisected by water and ice. Acadia National Park is a good place to witness the meeting of ocean and rock. Today we strolled the top of Cadillac Mountain (named after the same Frenchman who founded the city of Detroit), 1530 feet high and the place where the rays of the sun first shine on the USA--several times a year. What does that mean? Anyway, it is a beautiful spot from which you can see the town of Bar Harbor far below. The clouds were rolling in today so photos didn't really do the place justice. One interesting man-made feature of the park is the series of stone bridges built by John D. Rockefeller, Jr., when this was the playground of the wealthy. He contributed a significant portion of the park's land. After driving through the park, we headed over to Northeast Harbor to get a ferry ride to several small islands off the coast.
